Movie Help Web Popcorn Kernels:
Satire works when there is more than a grain of truth in the joke, and this movie takes on the original cast of the Star Trek series and spoofs it to the stars. Tim Allen plays the actor who played Commander Peter Quincy Taggart, the square-jawed hero of the wonderful sci-fi series Galaxy Quest. He does a spot-on job of mimicking our favorite Captain Kirk, with the "gee whiz" enthusiasm and also a rather large ego. He, and his fellow cast members (including the busty Sigourney Weaver and the world-weary Alan Rickman) are playing the sci-fi con circuit, plugging their long-gone show and, it seems, doing the same jokes and same routines.
Something happens on the way to the convention, however, as real aliens come down to meet with the "Commander." They believe he is their only hope for survival, not knowing that he is only an actor and their "historical documents" are only TV shows. The rest of the movie deals with his and his fellow actors trying to play their characters in real life, with real laser guns and real alien planets...
This movie was a hoot, with numerous nods to situations found in the Star Trek series, as well as other sci-fi greats. Anyone who appreciates this genre should definitely see the movie, as not only does it spoof, it also tells an original story that is pretty darn good.
