Ian McKellen
Born May 25, 1939 - Burnley, Lancashire, England
This distinguished and very versatile actor grew up in the small mining town of Wigan. He developed his love for the theater at a very young age and made sure to be in as many amateur school plays as possible, very much encouraged by his parents. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts in 1961 and continued his work in theater. Eventually he moved to TV and the movies, although his first love is the stage.
He has played in a number of Shakespeare's productions, including Richard III (1995). All this dramatic work served him well for his best-known sci-fi/fantasy characters, Magneto in the X-Men and Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings series. He was knighted in 1990, is a vegetarian, and very active in the Gay Rights movement.
Personal Quote: "Acting is no longer about lying. It's now about revealing the truth. People are at ease with me now. Honesty is the best policy."
