Chris Columbus
Born: September 10, 1958 - Spanger, Pennsylvania
Born in Pennsylvania but raised in Ohio, this director enjoyed horror movies and comic books as a boy, and experimented with 8mm movies in junior high school. He later attended film school at New York University.
He was working in a comic book shop when director Steven Spielberg bought his script for the movie Gremlins and brought him to Hollywood. Columbus then wrote a number of scripts for Spielberg, including The Goonies and Young Sherlock Holmes. He got his first chance to direct with the movie Adventures in Babysitting.
He landed the director's job for the first two Harry Potter films when his friend Spielberg decided not to take them on, and won over the other hopefuls by promising author J.K. Rowling, to keep the filming in the UK and use English actors. He then lived in England for a few years while working on those two projects, but decided to bow out of the third movie to move back to the United States and spend more time with his family.
