Week of August 15

Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey Jr. get more than they bargained for in Tropic Thunder. They play actors filming a war movie based on a book by a Vietnam veteran (Nick Nolte). When their director (Steve Coogan) gets fed up with his stars, he drops them off in the jungle — and into the middle of a drug war. No scenes with Owen Wilson, but there's supporting roles for Tom Cruise, Matthew McConaughey, and Jon Voight.

George Lucas's sci-fi franchise goes animated in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. A story of conflict between the Jedi Knights and the Trade Federation's battle droids, it falls between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. Call it Star Wars 2 ½.

For people more in the mood for romance, Vicky Cristina Barcelona is designed to fit the bill. Woody Allen's latest film stars Scarlett Johansson and Rebecca Hall as two American women traveling aboard who fall for a Spanish painter (Javier Bardem). Unfortunately for them, the artist comes with his own baggage, in the form of a tempestuous ex-wife played by Penélope Cruz.

Also opening this week: Mirrors, a horror flick with Kiefer Sutherland; Fly Me to the Moon, about three houseflies who accidentally join the Apollo 11 mission; Henry Poole is Here, a dramedy with Luke Wilson (limited); and The Girl Cut in Two (limited), about a French love triangle.
