Week of August 1
Brendan Fraser can't seem to get enough of those mummies. Seven years after explorer Rick O'Connell's last adventure, Fraser returns in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, to take on Jet Li and his army of terra-cotta warriors, a 2,000-year-old force accidentally revived by his son Alex (Luke Ford). It's up to O'Connell, his wife Evelyn (Maria Bello, picking up where Rachel Weisz left off) and brother-in-law Jonathan (John Hannah) to deal with the newest threat to humankind. Here's an even more pressing question: does The Mummy have what it takes to dethrone The Dark Knight?
In this weekend's other major release, Kevin Costner plays a beer-drinking average Joe who hasn't done anything worth noticing until the presidential election comes down to his ballot. Kelsey Grammer and Dennis Hopper play the candidates vying for his support (with Stanley Tucci and Nathan Lane as their respective campaign managers); Larry King, Bill Maher, Arianna Huffington, and Willie Nelson are among the many celebrities making cameos.
Also opening: Midnight Meat Train, about a serial killer in the NYC subway; immigrant drama Frozen River (limited); and Manhattan romance In Search of a Midnight Kiss.
Week of August 8
Seth Rogen and James Franco find themselves on the run when Rogen, after buying some rare marijuana from his dealer (Franco), accidentally witnesses a murder; soon, the forces of a corrupt cop (Rosie Perez) and a drug lord (Gary Cole) are on their trail. Rogen co-wrote the script with Evan Goldberg, his writing partner on Superbad, and Judd Apatow helped develop the story.
Promising more of a chick flick is The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, the follow-up to 2005's comedy-romance. In the adaptation of the fourth book in Ann Brashares's series, Amber Tamblyn, Gilmore Girls' Alexis Bleidel, Ugly Betty's America Ferrera, and Blake Lively head off to college, but do their best to stay BFFs despite the distance.
Also opening, in limited release: Hell Ride, a biker pic with Dennis Hopper; Bottle Shock, about a small California vineyard taking on the French; and Elegy, a older teacher-younger student romance with Ben Kingsley and Penélope Cruz.
