Week of July 4
Will Smith kicks off the month with the July 1 release of Hancock. He stars as the title character, an alcoholic superhero who starts to mend his reputation with help from Jason Bateman's PR consultant; since this is an action-comedy, Smith repays the favor by developing feelings for Bateman's wife, played by Charlize Theron.
There are no superheros in Diminished Capacity, just a journalist with memory impairment (Matthew Broderick); his uncle (Alan Alda), who has his own issues with Alzheimer's; and the journalist's onetime girlfriend (Virginia Madsen). The quirky plot follows the trio as they attempt to sell a rare baseball card owned by the uncle.
Also opening, in limited release: The Wackness, with Josh Peck as a young pot dealer who barters with Ben Kingsley; and Kabluey, in which writer-director-star Scott Prendergast takes a job as an Internet company's mascot to help support his sister-in-law (played by Lisa Kudrow) and her two kids.
Week of July 11
Another unlikely superhero returns to the screen in Hellboy II: The Golden Army, a follow-up to 2004's introduction of the demon. Ron Perlman returns as the titular character, as does Selma Blair as his love interest and Doug Jones as their partner; Luke Goss plays an elfin prince who tries to destroy humanity.
The extraterrestial theme continues with Journey to the Earth (based on the Jules Verne classic), in which Brendan Frasher stumbles across a lost world while searching for his missing brother. And in the sci-fi comedy Meet Dave, little aliens (flying a ship that looks like Eddie Murphy) are on a mission to save their planet.
Also opening, in limited release: Garden Party, about the young-and-confused in Los Angeles, and August, with Josh Hartnett as a dot-com founder trying to keep his work and life from falling apart.
